TEACHING HISTORY AND QUALIFICATIONS
Tammy Whetham offers voice lessons at her home studio in Cambridge, Ontario, with a teaching career that spans over 15 years. She possesses versatility in singing and teaching a wide range of genres, including classical, musical theatre, jazz, and pop. Her particular interest lies in contemporary singing styles.
Tammy’s qualifications include an Honours BMus from Wilfrid Laurier University. She has also completed additional training at prestigious institutions like The Banff Centre, Shenandoah University, and NYU. Her dedication to continuous learning and professional development ensures she remains at the forefront of teaching methods and techniques, delivering exceptional instruction to her students.
As a sought-after voice teacher, Tammy’s passion and understanding of the voice has led her to direct children’s musical theatre programs and present performance and audition masterclasses. Her students have been accepted into prestigious Canadian classical and musical theatre training programs, invited to OMFA Provincials, and achieved success in RCM examinations. In addition to her teaching, Tammy has also served as an adjudicator and juror for various esteemed organizations and events. These include the Merriam Music Festival, Ontario Arts Council, Kiwanis Music Festival, and NATS Ontario. Her wealth of experience in these roles enhances her ability to provide insightful and constructive feedback to her students.
STUDIO ENVIRONMENT
Tammy’s studio is a positive and encouraging environment, welcoming students of all ages and musical backgrounds. From beginners to advanced students, Tammy caters to a diverse range of learners. She delights in nurturing young children’s passion for music, instilling confidence in beginner adults, and refining the performances of seasoned professionals. Students have the option between virtual lessons over zoom or in-person lessons at her studio in Cambridge, Ontario.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Tammy’s teaching approach centers on function-based voice pedagogy. Drawing from voice science, she employs tools to evaluate and identify technical inefficiencies in her students. This allows her to guide them towards developing a strong, balanced, flexible, and efficient voice. Tammy’s teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of vocal health, stylistic accuracy, and artistic expression. She encourages sustainable and artistically compelling performances, fostering vocal freedom and exploration of tonal colours.
